We are a generation of picture-takers.  Technology has been a blessing to our lives but it has been to our detriment as well.  I have a handful of pictures of my grandparents and I cherish them and they are up in my home.  I want my children to have pictures of me and I want my grandchildren to have pictures of my children. My great-grandchildren to have pictures of my grandchildren.  A beautiful timeline of our history and lives are in these images. Once you begin to look at these as bigger than the moment, they become invaluable.

And let’s face it, every expecting mommy WANTS newborn portraits.  It’s so tough to pass on this seemingly frivolous expense – but with all those lovely, raging hormones, it’s possible to keep our sanity with a photographer booked and ready.

Nadja

This year's big photo project is ON, and before leaving for long-awaited vacation I decided to share the very first photo of the series I called "Fathers and Daughters in B&W".
I myself always thought that mothers have a very different connections and relations to their kids than fathers. Well, you know, first being pregnant, then giving birth, carrying around, feeding, sleepless nights... stuff like that. And no matter sons or daughters - mom's love represents pure love as it is. And what about fathers? I always thought that fathers most certainly have strong connections with their sons. You know, same interests, same tastes, same look, same problems after all... And what about their daughters? I'll tell you what.
After working with newborns and their parents for over a year now, after witnessing most of my friends had their kids, after I myself had a second daughter earlier this year I think I made up my mind pretty clear: a father-daughter relationship is truly one of the most beautiful relationships that exist on Earth. From the very beginning it's something magical that is hard to describe, and that feeling evolves every single day in something even more beautiful and comprehensive. And let me add, watching those relationships grow and develop is a huge pleasure, as it is capturing them with a camera every now and then.
This is what my current photo project is about. Love at its finest, from the very beginning.
P.S. To my own dad: You never tell me how to live my life. You simply live yours, and let me watch you do it. Thank you

Emma

The more I work as a photographer, the more I get to involve in other people's lives. It's extraordinary, if you think about it. I get to capture greatest events, sincerest smiles, those looks, full of happiness and pure love, and sometimes even the most memorable moments of a lifetime... I can only imagine how great it is to observe all those families and relationships I've captured so far growing and blossoming over the years, and I hope I will get a chance to see it all some day. But even today I do get a glimpse on how a family photography works in perspective, and frankly speaking, there's no better example than this - photographing a newborn baby, who's mother you've captured during pregnancy. There's no greater miracle in Universe than bringing new life to a world - funny thing, but when I was the one giving birth I really didn't think about it. At all. Now I do, and I start to cherish the moments I didn't even pay attention to back in the days.

So, here's Emma - greatest bundle of joy and a little bit of heaven sent down to Earth. I wish her and her wonderful family lots of love and happiness, and I say once again: babies are like little suns that, in a magical way, bring warmth and light into our lives. How cool it is, that I get to enjoy it too... And capture it, obviously :)

With all this hustle and bustle around the Christmas season there's one thing we definitely should not forget - preparing gifts for our loved ones! So, if you have some time on your hands – crafty gifts are always appreciated for the time and effort that’s gone into them. Also, I prefer to buy local to support the small local shops, businesses and community in general. Nice idea would be to make the gift giving season last longer with a subscription to something your loved one will enjoy all year round - a monthly magazine, for example.
And here's what I know for sure: rather than buying physical items which end up cluttering up the house, choose an experience you can enjoy together later on in the year. For example, tickets to see a favorite band, gift vouchers for a spa treatment or a loved restaurant, membership to a charity or historical gardens – all make really thoughtful presents and memories that can be treasured forever.

This holiday season I too have decided to help making your loved ones happy, cherished and pampered a bit, so from now on I'm offering gift certificates that entitle their owners to a photo shoot, be it either a family or a couple, outdoors or studio, event or lifestyle - everything is possible, just ask! All certificates are customized, made with love and care, on request they may either contain a money value or a themed session option, a name of a giver or recipient (or both), and so much more... Available in 4 languages and what I find best is that they have no expiry date, meaning they can be used literally any time! I was asked on several occasions previously if a gift voucher was an option on my web site, and even before I had this offer available I sold 5 of them, so I think it's about time I make it official. After all, I am a small local business entrepreneur who offers an exciting experience resulting in memorable photos, and you might need to buy a descent present these days, so why not?

Christmas shopping can seem like an enormous task sometimes – with the minefield of who to buy for, how much to spend and what to buy. But it shouldn’t be stressful – gift buying, wrapping and giving should be a joy. Don't forget about that and happy shopping, everyone!

Yours, Anna

You may well have visited lots of newborn websites and be left wondering why most newborn photographers want your baby to be aged 7-10 days old for their photography session? You might also be wondering what happens if your baby is already 10 days old. Is it too late?! Well the age of the baby can make a difference to the type of photographs and poses that you will get from your session. The reason for the 7 – 10 day window is because the baby is still very flexible, tiny and super sleepy. When the baby is still only a few days old, they are able to get into those curly, womb like positions which make for a gorgeous photo. That said, it really does depend on the baby, not all babies care to be posed in a womb like position, but as a rule of thumb, younger babies don’t mind so much. They will sleep a lot more and be less concerned about being naked - so long as they are kept cosy and warm.

Katerina

This was my very first newborn lifestyle session, and just as I expected (or hoped, to be honest), it turned out great. Baby Katerina was born in the middle of spring, just a few weeks after I shoot her parents in a wonderful location among colorful flowers and beautiful nature (read more on that day here). Initially this session was supposed to be a 100% newborn fashion shoot, with all those cute outfits and props, all mint and pink, and I was very much looking forward to it since I only shoot newborn boys before (funny fact, I know). And so, on a big day, baby Katerina decided she's not very keen on what we've planned for her, and I'm pretty sure this is exactly what she wanted - all the photos I made on that afternoon look so natural, so simple and beautiful at the same time, featuring young, wonderful family at its finest. In the end of the day both parents and I agreed that it was a great afternoon, cosy and comfortable for all, and the memories we've managed to capture are simply priceless. So happy for them! As always, wishing new parents and their adorable baby all the best, today and always! And here's some sneak pics for you, guys!

James

This little young man was brought to my home studio by his parents on a sunny Saturday, exactly 13 days after his birth. He was sleeping safe and sound and looking gorgeous, obviously. Technically it's the smallest baby that has ever came to my place - you see, we moved here when my daughter was 2 years old. So it was a huge deal. He behaved so very well during the shoot, and even managed to lift his head up for the very first time - and I was there to capture it, along with tears of joy in his grandmother's eyes, happy smile on his mother's face and his father's proud look. It was pure magic.
Now I'm eager to witness this little miracle growing up and achieving big things. Wishing all the best to baby James and his lovely family!

In the ’90s, it was Anne Geddes’s game: photographing naked newborns artfully curled up in pea pods or nestled in hollowed-out watermelons. A pioneer of pre-Internet Cute Overload, Geddes sold an estimated 19 million books worldwide, and, clearly, planted a seed. In the nearly two decades since her calendar- and stationery-spawning coffee-table book Down in the Garden debuted, a new era of newborn photo shoots has blossomed.

For parents past, newborn photos were often limited to those offered by some hospitals, with infants tucked into standard-issue pink-and-blue-striped blankets lying in their plexiglass cribs. Children’s photography tended to mean an annual awkward department store shot. Today, if you're getting married and you want to capture that day, you hire a wedding photographer. In a similar way, if you have a baby and you want to capture the baby and really have these beautiful mementos, then you need to hire someone to do that for you. Same goes for both family photo shoot and Babybauch, as they call it in German.

Dear moms-to-be. Here I am, offering my services as an inspired photographer for your maternity photo session. As simple as that. My passion is to create a wonderful experience at your portrait session that celebrates the memories, milestones and miracles of your family life, and what isn't the real miracle as not the very beautiful in her own mother-to-be? To create incredible images that freeze those moments in time for you to treasure forever - that's the task I'm very comfortable with and convenient to accomplish these days. So, I've prepared new backdrops and props for a spring photo shoot I'm organizing at my home, as well as 4 different dresses (pictured below) for maternity photography. It most probably will be indoor only until it's cold outside, and the location is Pfaeffikon SZ. Each session will take about 2 hours, and you'll get ALL the nice digital pictures we'll manage to capture afterwards (in my experience there will be around 40 of them). Feel free to bring your husbands and children - family pictures will be included as well! The cost is yet to be determined, but I'd say it's roughly 100 to 150 CHF.

And back to babies... Little toes, pursed lips, and tiny hands - newborn photography is very special, and I am actually eager to jump in. But as a mom myself, I understand clearly that working with and posing a 5- to 10-day-old infant demands special skills, as does keeping the child safe and the new parents comfortable, while capturing the subject’s raw and natural beauty. So, here's what I know and have so far:
  • During my first Christmas photo shoots this season I learned that establishing trust with clients - families with small kids in my case - is important, so I'm pretty sure working with newborns and their parents is alike.
  • I've already learned how to use natural lighting sources for my photography, as well as studio lights and other equipment.
  • I've done some research and have already purchased simple wraps and materials, as well as other props for newborn photography, such as flower headbands and tutu skirts for girls, knitted crochet costume and a cap for boys, different blankets and rugs etc (on the picture below)
  • I've learned some posing styles and constantly read about new ones, as well as study numerous transition advices to ensure that session goes smoothly.
  • I'm well familiar with post-processing workflows since I've been taking and editing landscape and travel pics for over 3 years now (you can see those on my blog here or on my Instagram)
  • Calming techniques and understanding the physical requirements of newborns is a task I still have to master, and this is the moment when practice is everything.

  • I've learned that for studio photography the ideal age of a baby is between 5-12 days. When babies are that tiny they spend a lot of time sleeping and still curl up into very sweet poses similar to the positions they were in when they were in the womb. After two weeks babies go through a growth spurt and will start stretching their arms and legs and will not be as amenable to curling up for a picture or sleeping as soundly, which is needed for some of the poses.
  • They say studio sessions typically last 3-4 hours which includes portraits of the baby on his or her own and then with each parent and then the whole family together. That may seem like a long time, but usually about half of that time is spent feeding and comforting the baby to get him or her as sleepy and happy as possible for the portraits.
  • It is also recommended to bring some good things like pacifiers, a change of clothes for yourself (if you’re going to be in the photos holding a naked baby you might get pooped on), some extra diapers and wipes, extra formula or bottles if you are not breastfeeding, and any special blankets or toys that you want included in the photos.
  • The worst thing a parent can do is be nervous. I know its easy to be nervous, especially when it’s your first child, but I think the best thing a parent can do is enjoy watching their newborn in all those adorable poses.
So all I need now is a newborn baby :) Better two or more. And I'm asking here: are there any new moms willing to try this? We'll do it at my home in Pfaeffikon SZ, and I'm very flexible in time. We'll take pics of the baby itself, then with mommy, daddy, siblings and family pics of course. There will be 2 to 3 sets for family photos, and say... 8 sets for the baby. About the price... As I've never done it before I won't charge you a fortune, but I cannot either name the exact price since I'm not sure yet how it goes (pretty sure it's going to be fun but hard too). Say 100 to 150 CHF. Included are ALL the nice pictures (digital on a drive) I'll manage to capture (with my Christmas photo shoots there were around 50 photos per family). I'm also ready to print the best ones, to make birth announcement cards or a even a photo book on your request.

Now, when I think about it, indeed, newborn shoots paint a picture of bliss and babies who actually sleep, rather than the torment of sleepless nights and spit-up. Ironically, that chaos is the precise reason why many moms invest in a newborn shoot, saying they want to capture the priceless, precious moments they may never clearly remember themselves. Now, looking back at my 3,5 year old daughter's pics I think wow, I will never see that baby again! She’s gone forever, and all I have are my pictures of her. (And herself of course, playing, running and screaming around while I'm writing this, but that's a different story to tell)

About me

Hi there! I'm Anna, Ukrainian expat living in Switzerland for eight years now and using every opportunity to explore the world from my home base in Zurich. I am a photographer, a visual story teller and a mother of two. I work as an independent photographer, capturing families, future moms, newborns, as well as diverse events and lifestyle. Landscape and travel photography are my passion for a while now, but portraiture is what brings me smile, so I go for it at my finest.

Super fond of TV-Shows, board games, traveling and hiking. I like cooking, swimming and singing, and I also knit, read books, play guitar and make family videos. My goal is to capture my memories in photos and posts that show how easy it is to start from scratch and travel the world with a kid in a backpack when working abroad. Enjoy :)
