You may well have visited lots of newborn websites and be left wondering why most newborn photographers want your baby to be aged 7-10 days old for their photography session? You might also be wondering what happens if your baby is already 10 days old. Is it too late?! Well the age of the baby can make a difference to the type of photographs and poses that you will get from your session. The reason for the 7 – 10 day window is because the baby is still very flexible, tiny and super sleepy. When the baby is still only a few days old, they are able to get into those curly, womb like positions which make for a gorgeous photo. That said, it really does depend on the baby, not all babies care to be posed in a womb like position, but as a rule of thumb, younger babies don’t mind so much. They will sleep a lot more and be less concerned about being naked - so long as they are kept cosy and warm.
Knowing that, imagine my surprise when I learned that the baby girl I'm going to work with is about 1 month old, moreover, parents asked to come to their place instead of my studio and take some outdoor pictures too! Here I had everything a newborn photographer would rather not be keen on: age, location, light and cold. Nevertheless, things worked out just wonderful! The weather was great, it was warm and sunny, so we managed to take all the nice pictures outside, and my model was just the perfect little angel! I know this wouldn't be possible to do a week later already, so I'm really grateful nature was on our side and happy with the results.
Interesting fact: baby's mom knows another Ukrainian girl named Anna who lives in Switzerland and is also a photographer! I mean I can imagine that such a person exists, even though the odds are very low (trust me, as I'm a math teacher as well), but the fact that I met the person who knows that other Anna is a real miracle indeed :)
P.S. My favorite shot was taken inside though, it's more of a lifestyle photography and features a peaceful scene of this family's routine life - older brother was holding his baby sister's hand and carefully watching her being dressed up, and then he looked at me and I saw it all at once. I saw him growing up and becoming this loving and caring brother one can only dream of, the one who's your best friend and partner in crime, who's both your protector and teacher, and I knew he's always gonna be there for her, no matter what. That moment was very special, at least for two of us, and here I'm sharing it with the world.
